redshift

This continuing series of oil and mixed media paintings began after I learned that scientists were mapping every galaxy in the (expanding) universe. The maps are shaped like pie slices filled with dots; every dot is an entire galaxy of stars. That motif, hourglass-like, with our vantage point on earth at the vertex, echoes the shape of other, more earthly "maps," like sonograms, or a baseball field.

Playing galactic hugeness against our day-to-day existence became the theme of this series. Fragmentary juxtapositions of images and materials allow for different levels of interpretation, from the irreverent to the spiritual.
